What is an inlay or onlay?

Bridge the gap between a simple filling and a full crown with our custom-crafted Inlays and Onlays are the perfect, more conservative way to restore your tooth’s natural strength and beauty.

An inlay or onlay is a custom restoration designed to repair a damaged tooth while preserving more natural tooth structure than a traditional crown. An onlay restores a larger portion of the tooth and may extend over one or more cusps to strengthen weakened areas. Think of them as a middle ground between a filling and a crown: stronger and more protective than a filling, while often preserving more natural tooth structure than a full crown.

A more conservative approach to dentistry

Some dental treatments can be unnecessarily aggressive, requiring removal of more healthy tooth structure than may actually be needed. At Forever Smiles, our philosophy is different. We use modern adhesive dentistry techniques and advanced ceramic materials to preserve healthy tooth structure whenever possible. Our goal is simple: remove weakened, cracked, or decayed portions of the tooth while preserving healthy natural tooth structure whenever it is safe and predictable to do so.

Why does this matter?

Healthy tooth structure matters. In many cases, preserving more natural teeth can contribute to better long-term strength and tooth health.

Good options. Better options. The right choice for you.

At Forever Smiles, we believe patients deserve options and clear explanations of the benefits and tradeoffs of each. Not every tooth requires the same solution, and not every patient has the same goals, priorities, or budget. Sometimes a composite (white filling) is an excellent treatment option. It is often more heavily covered by insurance and may be an excellent “good” option for many situations. But in certain situations, especially with larger fillings, cracks, worn teeth, or weakened tooth structure, a custom porcelain inlay or onlay may offer meaningful advantages and become the “better” option.

What’s the difference?

Composite fillings are placed directly inside the mouth and hardened during the appointment. They are versatile, conservative, and work very well in many situations. Porcelain restorations, such as inlays and onlays, are created outside of the mouth using advanced digital technology and premium ceramic materials. Because they are fabricated under controlled conditions, porcelain restorations can provide greater precision, strength, and natural aesthetics.

Advanced same-day ceramic technology

At Forever Smiles, many inlays and onlays can be designed, created, and bonded in a single appointment using advanced same-day ceramic technology. Traditional dentistry often requires temporary restorations and multiple visits over several weeks. With our same-day digital workflow, we can often digitally scan your tooth, design a precise custom restoration, mill it in-office using advanced ceramic technology, customize its shape, contour, and appearance, and bond it permanently, often in the same visit

Why bonding matters

Modern ceramic materials can be bonded directly to the tooth structure, helping strengthen weakened teeth while preserving more healthy enamel and dentin.

When carefully planned and properly bonded, ceramic inlays and onlays may provide a more conservative alternative to crowns in many situations, excellent strength and durability, beautiful, natural-looking aesthetics, seamless blending with surrounding teeth, and long-term protection for compromised teeth.

Beautiful dentistry that preserves your natural teeth

If you have a cracked tooth, large filling, cavity, or worn tooth, you may have more treatment options than you realize. At Forever Smiles, we focus on preserving healthy tooth structure whenever possible while helping patients understand the difference between good options and better options, without pressure and without judgment.
